Honoring a Legacy of Advocacy and Service

As an attorney at Sand Law and the father of founding partners, Bill and Rick Sand, Richard “Dick” Sand held a particularly meaningful place within the firm. His decades of legal experience, unwavering dedication to his family, and commitment to the firm’s success helped shape Sand Law into what it is today.

Dick practiced law for nearly 40 years, focusing primarily on criminal defense. He had a genuine passion for the practice of law and considered it a privilege to represent individuals facing some of the most difficult circumstances of their lives. Throughout his career, he approached his work with compassion, dedication, and a deep respect for the people and communities he served.

That same commitment to public service extended well beyond the courtroom. For more than 30 years, Dick served on the White Bear Town Board, demonstrating his enduring dedication to the community he proudly called home.

Dick earned his law degree from Hamline University School of Law. Before pursuing his legal education, he studied political science at the College of St. Thomas and at the University of Rhodesia in present-day Zimbabwe, Africa. His educational experiences, particularly his time abroad, helped shape the perspective he brought to his legal career.

Faith, Family & Community

Above all, Dick was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His family was the greatest source of pride and joy in his life. He cherished his 43-year marriage, treasured the time he spent with his grandchildren, and took immense pride in watching his sons establish and grow Sand Law.

Dick’s passion for the legal profession became a lasting family legacy. After decades of practicing law, he had the special privilege of spending the final years of his career working alongside his sons at the firm they founded.

His dedication to family was matched by his commitment to the community. Beyond his decades of public service on the White Bear Town Board, Dick generously devoted his time to amateur baseball, his church, the White Bear Lake Area Historical Society, and Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers.

Whether serving his community, representing a client, or spending time with those closest to him, Dick lived by the values that mattered most to him: faith, family, service, and a genuine commitment to helping others.

Remembering Dick Sand

Dick’s passing in 2026 marked the loss of a beloved father, grandfather, colleague, and friend. His legacy extends far beyond his distinguished legal career. It lives on through the family he cherished, the community he faithfully served, and the countless individuals whose lives he touched over more than four decades in the practice of law.

For Sand Law, Dick was more than an experienced attorney. He was a father to the firm’s founders, a trusted colleague, and an important part of the firm’s history and identity.
